Are you familiar with the effects of sleep apnea and treatments that can be administered? If you have sleep apnea, it means that you have interrupted breathing patterns while you sleep. This may be the result of a blocked airflow or interrupted brain signals sent to your breathing muscles in your chest. If left untreated, it can lead to severe problems including high blood pressure, stroke or heart failure.

Are you aware of the common risks of sleep apnea? If you have a family history of the condition or have any genetic predispositions for the trait, you may be at an increased risk for developing the disorder as well. Furthermore, if you have large tonsils, a large tongue a small jaw in relation to your face, are over the age of 40, are a male or are overweight, you may be at an increased risk for sleep apnea. Furthermore, any obstructions or blocked airflow problems in your mouth, including a deviated septum or allergies and sinus problems, can increase your risk for the disorder.

To help properly treat sleep apnea, a visit to our dentist may be required. In many cases, simply by adjusting your sleeping habits or using an oral appliance or device to open up your airways and support your jaw, you may be able to combat the risks and effects of sleep apnea. In severe cases, surgery may be required.
