Many people are horrified of the dental office, but now, thanks to the latest advancements in the dental field, people are more likely to feel more comfortable in the dental chair!
Sedation dentistry is a very beneficial and successful element of dentistry that helps patients feel more and more comfortable in the hands of the dentist. There are many different types of dental sedatives available today, but the most common sedatives include:
• Oral Sedation: Oral sedation comes in the form of a pill. Generally, patients take the pill one hour prior to their appointment. The affects of this pill are similar to Valium and they generally make you feel drowsy and calm. When you take this pill, you will remain awake and responsive during your dental treatment. Although, some people become groggy enough that they actually fall asleep. But if you do fall asleep, we will wake you up with a gentle shake.
• Nitrous Oxide Sedation: Nitrous oxide sedation is a light and flavored sedative that is also known as laughing gas. When you come to our dental office, the dentist will place a small mask over your nose and will ask you to deeply inhale for a few minutes. As times passes by, the sedative will make you feel a bit tingly and light headed. This helps you feel calm and relaxed in the dental chair. When the treatment is finished, the dentist will remove the mask and you will begin to feel the sedative wear off. With this sedative, you are able to drive yourself home.
